Why I made Aberto #

I used to be a 1Password user. For years and years, through a lot of big changes, I stuck with them. It is, even today, one of the best Password Managers on the market.
Over time, however, the things I didn’t like started adding up. First it was little things, like adding a subscription, then they started moving to the cloud, then the local vaults were deprecated in favor of their own sync.

What finally broke the camel’s back was their move away from a native client towards a cross-platform client. And while I totally understand the decision from a business perspective, I absolutely disagree from a long-time users perspective.

So I switched away, trying one app or anther, only to realize that there are no good apps out there! “All of them suck” (which I realize is probably a rather subjective and simplistic statement. What can I say, sometimes I lack a filter)

So, after some complaining a bit on quite a few podcasts, I decided to put my money, or rather my time, where my mouth is: Over the christmas holidays of 2021, I started to write what has now become Aberto. It started with “Can I generate a strong password” and then slowly grew from there.

Where the name comes from #

Aberto is literally Portugese for “to open”. It’s also an Opening Charm from the Harry Potter universe. And while I’m no fan of JKR, it seemed very fitting as a name. The App literally opens virtual doors for you.
